The highly repetitious overhead arm action of freestyle swimming puts enormous load on the human shoulder and neck.
Shoulder injuries are very prevalent amongst the endurance swimming population, often caused by both technique faults in the water and a lack of stability and strength on dry land.
"In this talk I will present the issues and propose some practical ways to build robust shoulders to allow us human fish to stay in the water as long as we like."
Jo McRae is a PT and S&C coach with a deep understanding of swimming. As an experienced swimming teacher and coach she has worked with adults and children from beginner to elite to raise the understanding of S&C on dry land, and to prevent injury and enhance performance.
Her recent swimming exploits include:
- SwimRun Studland 2025 - 3rd woman in 3 hours 50 (long 23.2Km - 5.6Km of swimming)
- Le Defi de Monte Cristo 2024 - 23rd woman (116 finishers) in 1 hour 43 mins (6km Sea swim from Chateux d’If to the Prado beaches of Marseille)
- EDF aqua challenge Nice 2023 - 60th woman (97 finishers) in 1 hour 33 mins no wetsuit (5km swim across the bay of Nice)
- Swimrunman Grand Lac de Laffrey 2022 - “classic duo” 3rd female team in 3 hours 50 mins (23.8km - 3.6km swim)
