About this Event
If you or your family fish along the Woonasquatucket River, this event is for you.
Join the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) and the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) for an important community discussion about health risks related to fish caught downstream of the Centredale Manor Superfund Site, near the Johnston and Smithfield border.
RIDOH will share findings from recent studies showing elevated levels of dioxins and other harmful chemicals in fish caught in certain parts of the river. These contaminants can pose serious long-term health risks, especially to people who regularly eat what they catch.
At this session, you’ll learn:
- Which parts of the river are safe for fishing
- Where you should avoid eating fish, turtles, or plants
- How to reduce your exposure to harmful contaminants
- What the state is doing to monitor and protect public health
A Q&A session will follow. This event is especially important for individuals and families who rely on the river for food or recreation.
