First Friday: Black Buttafly! 🦋🎶January's event features singer-songwriter, artist, and producer Kayla Childs, also known as Black Buttafly. Rooted in Gospel, Jazz, and Soul, with influences like Patrice Rushen and J Dilla, Black Buttafly is a Philly-based artist who has toured the U.S., U.K., Europe, and Australia. She's played, studied, and recorded with icons like Ms. Lauryn Hill, Pete Rock, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Hannibal Burress, Grammy Award Winning Artist Jermaine Holmes, and many more. Black Buttaflys’ long awaited debut ep, “Fly Free” has just released this fall with her single “Everybody Needs Love” leading the way.
A musical performance, "Without Vision" will be presented through Philadelphia Cultural Treasures in collaboration with grantee Patrice Worthy and Black Buttafly alongside Steve Mckie, Nazir Ebo, Saxophonist Yesseh Furaha-Ali, and Ursula Rucker—exploring Black relationships, community, generational trauma, and personal identity while exploring the many themes of Mickalene Thomas: All About Love.
First Friday at the Barnes includes access to the collection and special exhibition Mickalene Thomas: All About Love, on view until January 12th.
