The Springfield Art Museum celebrates Slow Art Day with a special performance by Sandi Baker, Re Baker Dietz, and Charlie Becker's "Lady Margaret" crankie between 6pm and 8pm at The Art Study Club, located at 431 S Jefferson, Suite 108. What's a crankie!? A crankie is a hand-cranked storytelling deviceβpart performance, part visual art. It features a long illustrated scroll, often made of fabric or paper, wound between two spools inside a box-like frame. As the scroll slowly unrolls, scenes come to life in sequence, usually accompanied by live music or narration. Performed in a darkened room with backlighting, the images glow as they pass by, sometimes enhanced with shadow puppets or cut-outs to add movement and magic in real time.
There will be three performances consisting of a silent run-through, a 5-minute full performance, and a 20-minute talk back. Performances times are at 6pm, 6:45pm, and 7:30pm.
The Museum Pop-Up Shop will also be open, as well as a take-home activities. We can't wait to see you there!
