Indiana Landmarks presents “Timeless Visual Poetry,” an exhibit by award-winning artist Michael Martin featuring drawings and paintings spanning his career of nearly five decades. Skillfully working in pencil, charcoal, watercolor, and mixed media, Martin is highly regarded for his meticulous draftsmanship and his “dreamy visual poetry.” Describing his own work, Martin says, “I desire to conjure up through reflective, introspective drawings of mood—the quicksilver remembrances—much as are brought to memory by a special sound, taste, smell, or an old photograph. I want my moods to be timeless but without age.”Born in St. Louis in 1931 to a family devoted to the arts, Martin lived in Pittsburgh as a youth, studied at the Carnegie Art Institute, and later enrolled at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he graduated with Honors in 1953. His art has been exhibited widely in museums and galleries, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, and the National Academy of Design, as well as in museums at the Universities of Illinois and Michigan, Indiana University, and Purdue University. His work has been included in an International Exhibition at the United Nations, alongside paintings by Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse, and is housed in the permanent collection of the Minnesota Museum of Art. A long time of resident of Lafayette, Martin has received numerous past “best of show” awards from the Hoosier Art Salon and Lafayette’s Round the Fountain Art Fair.
Complimentary snacks and beverages will be available at the free First Friday opening reception on April 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. when guests can also see the stunning architecture of Indiana Landmarks Center’s grand spaces. Built as a Methodist church in the nineteenth century, the restored and adapted structure holds performance and reception venues in addition to Rapp Family Gallery and Indiana Landmarks’ headquarters.
