A little about me:
I am Sodaba Khalil. I am from Afghanistan and I moved to Rochester NY about 3 years ago. When I arrived in the US, as someone who was very much self taught, I never thought of myself attending an art school. Therefore, arriving in Rochester and being accepted to attend School of the Arts, I saw this as an opportunity to continue working on what I love and to improve on my skills. While going to school I have been a part of Roc Paint Division team for the program’s season 8 and 9 where we have painted mural designs around the city with a group of other talented young artists. After graduating from SOTA in the past year, I decided to go to college for art, and now I am committed to Rochester Institute of Technology, majoring in Illustration (BFA) and minoring in 2D Studio Arts. And I am going into my sophomore year in fall 2025. Overall, studying the arts and utilizing the knowledge shared with me at SOTA and continued at RIT has provided me with an amazing experience. Art plays a very big role in my life because I am studying it in college as well. So, being able to pursue a career in something I love will allow me to play a role in the way that this disciple evolves, this to me is a privilege.
A little bit about my art:
Throughout my life, directly or indirectly, I have always been involved with the arts. As a young child living in Herat, Afghanistan, my fondest memories centered on drawing, painting, and creating works of art that reflected the beauty of my environment. Whether it was painting the sunset or the night sky, which illustrated my fascination with astronomy, or landscapes of the spectacular natural regions that surrounded me, my art was, and continues to be, the way in which I communicate. From the landscapes of the peaceful mountains of Afghanistan and the sound of the waves of the ocean and the beaches of America to the portraits of my loved ones, from my love of nature to the love and my inspirations of space, and the beauty of this world.
My art is based on designing, working 2D and 3D, as well as illustrating realistic images either reflecting nature or portraits. Although I mainly use acrylics, oil paint, and working with soft and hard materials in 3 dimensional space and digital media as well.
