First Contact Pre-Anniversary Celebration
* Date: April 5th, 2025
* Time: 8am to 7pm
* Location: U.S.S. Seapass (docked at Langley Fine Art School, 9096 Trattle St, Fort Langley)
* Cost: $30 Canadian Dollars ($10 member discount) – Gold Pressed Latinum at par
This is the continuing mission of the U.S.S. Seapass: to explore strange new ideas, to contact unique and valued civilizations, and to celebrate the Vulcan ideals of Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. We invite all explorers, artisans and scientists, storytellers and culture holders, players and strategists to witness the skilled entrants vie to claim the Barony of Lions Gate’s Championships in three distinct specialties: Arts & Sciences, Bardic and Games! We also throw open the shuttlebay doors and welcome diplomats and dignitaries, archivists and translators, and good old fashioned gamesters to come and partake of several First Contact themed activities detailed below!
CHAMPIONSHIP ACTIVITIES
* Championship 001: Arts & Sciences
Greetings and Salutations from your current Lions Gate A&S Champion!
The time has come for our A&S Competition, and I could not be more excited. This year, we want to see your Passion! Let us know what drives you in the Arts and/or in the Science! We want to see what makes your medieval heart sing with joy, and want to teach us! With all the artisans in our fine Barony and beyond, whether in secret or outright and blatant, come on by and show us what you can and have done. Please send your entry wish to Maestra Etan na Garmna Caisil (FB Trish Graham, Barony of Lions Gate A&S Officer), and Baron and Baroness of Lions Gate at [email protected] and [email protected].
Two entries needed in order to compete for Champion, but single entries for feedback are ALWAYS welcome!
What do I need to enter? – a current SCA membership, two items you have made yourself, or two research papers you have written yourself, the sources list to show the judges about your research materials for the items or papers, and a small display, perhaps with photos or items to interact with so that the populace and the judges can see your work and chat with you. You also need to make sure to email or message the Barony in advance to declare your intent to compete so we can get judges ready for you!
* Championship 002: Bardic
Competitors for the belt will be performing 2 pieces (though we will accept single piece entries for feedback)
FIRST: a period piece with documentation.
This will be judged by gentles either familiar with the chosen period or with your chosen bardic medium. Documentation is to be sent by March 28th so that judges have time to read and familiarize themselves.
SECOND: A piece presented to the populace. This piece can be period or SCAdian or even just SCA appropriate. There is a theme for this particular piece, in keeping with the theme of the event itself. “First Contact” we want to hear about a first time meeting. That initial encounter that starts the whole ball rolling. Is it a meetcute? Maybe its an instant hatred? Entertain us with a story, song or other artistic expression of that first contact that was made.
Pieces should be between 3-10 minutes long.
Please let us know your wish to compete by March 1st to give us time to find suitable judges (Email to [email protected], and CC [email protected] and [email protected])
What do I need to enter? – a current SCA membership, two entries, and documentation for your historical entry to submit in advance. You also need to make sure to email or message the Barony in advance to declare your intent to compete so we can get judges ready for you!
* Championship 003: Games
Format details for Games Championship to follow as soon as possible! Bring period darts if you have them. Fox and Geese will be the board game played in the Championship, and the outside game will be Kubb!
FIRST CONTACT ACTIVITIES
All non-championship activities are open to the populace. If you would like to present as an Ambassador or Xeno-archaeologist, please contact the event crew.
* Activity 001: Cultural Ambassador at the Culture Fair – Participate either as a Cultural Ambassador, presenting your Persona and Time Period in brief (5 mins or less), or fill the audience as member of an alien species making “first contact” with fellow attendees.
* Activity 002: Xeno-archaeology Conference– Display and present an object, an idea that was culturally important or a specific watershed moment from period (from your own persona and culture or another time and area) which you have studied as an outside researcher and teach us about it.
* Activity 003: Gamesters of Lions Gate – Sometimes first contact is made in more unorthodox ways, most often through a series of games and challenges. All attendees are welcome to engage in bets of “Quatloos” (the currency of Triskelia), to see who the master strategist of the day is.
Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the best of both worlds: the future of Star Trek and the past of the Middle Ages!
Let’s boldly go where no event has gone before!
Captain Caemgen mac Garbith ui Andrais, Commanding Officer
Commander Sorcha inghean Triein, First Officer
