The First Coast Wind Symphony will present a chamber winds concert featuring the organization’s Small Groups at 4 pm on Sunday, March 8 at St. John’s Cathedral Taliaferro Hall, 256 E. Church St. in Jacksonville. Tickets are a $20 donation ($10 for students with ID) and are available at the door or online through Eventbrite. Free parking is available.

The First Coast Wind Symphony, Jacksonville’s premier community music organization, is a 60-member group led by music director Artie Clifton and conductor Paul Weikle. The organization provides a cultural service by offering free concerts of outstanding wind music throughout the greater Jacksonville area.

In addition to the full ensemble, the organization also features several small groups that perform varied programs of chamber music for wind instruments. https://www.fcwinds.org/events/services

The March 8 concert at St. John’s Cathedral will feature small groups in a delightful program of chamber wind music. The proceeds from this special fundraising event will support the organization’s annual Concerto Competition for High School Musicians, an event open to all Florida students. This 15th annual event supports music education by providing talented high school musicians with an opportunity to perform a concerto with wind symphony. Applications are due March 1, and the concert will be held April 26 at Jacksonville University. The winner receives a $1,500 scholarship; the second-place award is $500. https://www.fcwinds.org/events/concerto-competition

The First Coast Wind Symphony chamber music concert on March 8 will include music by the group’s flute, clarinet and trombone groups, and the brass quintet. The featured chamber work is Kurt Weill’s “Little Threepenny Music,” a suite for wind ensemble drawn from his 1928 play with music titled The Threepenny Opera, a German theater work with a libretto by Bertolt Brecht. Weill’s music, based on 1920’s jazz and dance music, includes the hit song “Mack The Knife.”

The First Coast Wind Symphony has released three albums to wide acclaim, Prevailing Winds, A Christmas Celebration and Symphonic Spirit, and a DVD titled Sounds of the First Coast. More information about the group is available at www.fcwinds.org.
