Ann Kale (1958-2024) was an award-winning, nationally recognized architectural lighting designer whose career spanned nearly forty years. In a profession historically dominated by men, Ann Kale's talent was both formidable and undeniable. With her namesake firm, Ann Kale Associates, she was responsible for illuminating many of Santa Barbara's landmark buildings including the Lobero Theatre, Cabrillo Pavilion Arts Center, MOXI Children's Museum, Music Academy of the West, Paseo Nuevo, and Hotel Californian. Ann Kale's legacy thrives in those iconic buildings, and in the work of the next generation of lighting designers, many of whom she mentored and inspired.
Lorie Dewhirst Porter is a writer specializing in architecture, interiors and culture.
After studying for a year at the Sorbonne in Paris, she attended UCLA, graduating with a degree in World Literature. She attended law school at USC, and practiced law for a decade before entering the publishing world as a legal editor. She is the author of Montecito Style (Monacelli) with noted photographer Firooz Zahedi. She has written for a variety of lifestyle publications including Galerie Magazine, C Magazine, Santa Barabara Magazine and The Riv.
