Violence interrupts. Creativity persists.
Taking place during Family Violence Prevention Month, FIREWEED will be showcasing re-emerging and established artists who have been reclaiming their bodies, minds and imaginations through creative practice.
Think sacred rage, joyful creation, getting grounded and gaining momentum. Like fireweed flourishing in landscapes transformed by fire, this event celebrates what grows when creativity is free to flourish again.
Not simply an exhibition about survival, FIREWEED is an unapologetic celebration of artistic imagination, creative freedom, humour, beauty, connection, resistance and yes, sacred rage; centred on artists’ work, agency and creative accomplishments.
- Visual Arts Exhibition: Original work by artists owning their creative practices and exploring possibility on their own terms. Including work by Honey Jalali, Mandy Stobo, Patricia Ricafort, Raha Jazayeri, Shone Thistle, Trina Rae Cuff (TR Grand). Entry to the exhibition is free with an invitation to donate to HomeFront.
- Workshops: Participatory opportunities for creative expression, empowerment, learning, connection and play. Workshops include Portrait Painting with Raha Jazayeri, Drawing the Line part line making, part poetry, a workshop with Adrienne Adams, Centred: A Creative Retreat with Clay by Nancy Shadlock, and learning about HomeFront, Calgary's Community Justice Response to Domestic Violence with Lindsay S. All workshops require registration, most are free to attend with an invitation to make a donation to HomeFront.
- FIREWEED: Wicked Tongues closes out the exhibition with a celebration of storytelling, music and poetry with James Rove, Kenna Burima, MelVee X, Shone Thistle, and Sheri-D Wilson.

In 1998, a group of Calgarians refused to accept the status quo. Out of their conversations, a collaborative approach to community justice and survivor support took shape.
The founding members of HomeFront imagined something different and got to work creating it. Thanks to them, there are tens of thousands of individuals and families imagining, with optimism, futures free from violence.
Coercive control, a pattern of abusive behaviour, narrows our choices and what we dare to imagine. Art expands what's possible. Through creativity and community, we witness one another, remember we are not alone, and reclaim our right to dream.
Entry to the exhibition is free with an invitation to donate to HomeFront.
Learn more about HomeFront on their website, or make a donation directly, here.
Our bodily autonomy and sacred imaginations are no longer up for debate.
We are FIREWEED. Rekindled. Reclaimed. Raging. Creative.
