Fireside Chat: Dave Turnbull's unusual journey to coding in Music-tech
About this Event
This month we've got a fireside chat with Dave Turnbull, a developer at Bonza Music — a startup building real-time, low-latency audio tech for musicians.
Dave's route into development wasn't the usual one. He started out in media production and photography, then spent a while building websites as a freelancer before doing a coding bootcamp to fill in the gaps. From there he landed at Bonza, starting as a junior and working his way up to mid-level.
We'll talk through that journey — what it's actually like to switch careers into development, what freelancing taught him (including the less glamorous bits), and how his design background turned out to be useful. If you're earlier in your career, or thinking about a similar switch, this part should be genuinely useful.
The second half is about Bonza itself — what they're building, the technical challenges of doing real-time audio over the internet, what it's like working at a startup day to day, and the realities of startup life.
As always, it's a casual chat rather than a polished talk, so come along with questions.
As usual doors open at 6:30pm for Pizza. No live streaming for this event, but I will upload it afterwards
