In an era of disappearing local editorials, who is left to champion the arts? In this Fireside chat, we'll tackle the growing need for local and regional arts writing, and why robust criticism is essential to a healthy creative ecosystem. Featured guests Sarah Higgins, Robert Alan Grand, and Colony Little will discuss what's at stake when these voices go quiet, and how we can build new models to support arts dialogue in our communities. MEET THE SPEAKERS
SARAH HIGGINS is Executive + Artistic Director of Art Papers. Previously, she was curator at the Zuckerman Museum of Art at Kennesaw State University from 2015-2018. Higgins has curated over 40 exhibitions for institutions such as the Hessel Museum of Art, Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, and Atlantic Center for the Arts.
ROBERT ALAN GRAND is a writer and photographer in Winston-Salem, NC. His writings on art and culture have appeared in Art in America, Brooklyn Rail, The Bitter Southerner, and the Oxford American, among others, and his photographs of the rural South have appeared in numerous exhibitions and regional publications. Grand is the Carolinas editor-at-large at Burnaway.
COLONY LITTLE is a writer and critic based in Raleigh, NC. She is the founder of Culture Shock Art, a contemporary art blog dedicated to amplifying the voices of Black artists and artists of color. She is a 2020 recipient of the Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant and her work is featured in Artnet News, ARTnews, CARLA, Hyperallergic, The Art Newspaper, Arts.Black, W Magazine, and Walter Magazine.
