About this Event
Does your idea of starting a campfire involve throwing some wood in a pile, soaking it in camp fuel, throwing a match on it, and hoping for the best? Do your cooking fires end with your bacon being turned to carbon? If your life depended on it, could you start a fire in the rain?
You can do better. We’ll help you get there.
This one-day course is a solid introduction to the science of effective firecraft from the ground up. We will begin with explaining the chemical reaction that is the “Fire Triangle,” followed by the difference between tinder, kindling, and fuelwood, and what kinds of wood are best for what purposes. We’ll talk about fire construction and how to prepare your firewood, with an introduction to basic woodland tool skills.
Learn what kinds of fires are best for cooking, signaling, and warmth, followed by how to effectively start them with a knife and ferrocerium rod. We'll even show you how to make a primitive friction fire with a bow drill.
This course is ideal for campers, backpackers, hunters, or anyone else who enjoys spending time outdoors.
