Fire Mimicry and TEK @ Indian Canyon

Indian Canyon Nation, EcoCamp Coyote, and Sudden Oak Life are collaborating once again to bring you a 3-day intensive workshop in Fire Mimicry and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK).

This is a hands-on course. Expect to be in the thick of the forest, get dirty, and work hard. There are opportunities to engage in all ranges of experience and abilities.

What is Fire Mimicry?

In an era of catastrophic wildfires, sudden oak death, and overall forest decline Lee Klinger of Sudden Oak Life teaches us the science and practice of Fire Mimicry. He helps us to implement a method where humans manually mimic the beneficial functions fire serves in a healthy ecosystem. Over the course of the weekend, our relationship and understanding with fire evolves to appreciate the integral role fire plays in natural ecological cycles. Lee cultivates our agency towards a shared vision of restoring firesafe ecosystems and communities.

Plan to gain experience in:

• Brush and fuel-load reduction
• Soil fertilization regimen
• Lime wash and poultice application
• Demonstration of stem canker surgical procedure
• Moss and lichen removal
• Modern cultural stewardship of Central Coast forests
• Identifying culturally modified ‘ancestor’ trees and landscapes

What is Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)?

TEK is the deeply rooted knowledge of indigenous people over thousands of years acquired through careful observation and cultivation of the environment. This knowledge honors the sacred relationships formed between plants, animals, weather, fire, and human intervention.

Kanyon ‘CoyoteWoman’ Sayers-Roods, Mutson-Ohlone of Indian Kanyon Nations share's their experience and wisdom around:

• The history and shared lineages of the Esselen and Mutsun Ohlone People
• How this restoration work supports and is informed by indigenous culture and traditions
• Right-relationships with the land and its people
• Native plant identification and traditional uses

Meet Your Host

EcoCamp Coyote is an internationally recognized ecosystem-restoration camp that hosts fun, educational, and action-oriented events, which aim to heal post-industrial agricultural land, marginalized and poisoned roadsides, and forests impacted by fire and cultural suppression. They will be demonstrating an off-grid mobile kitchen throughout the weekend. What does this mean? It means meals are cooked using minimal energy from fossil fuels. The kitchen contains a solar oven (the villager), mobile cob pizza oven (cob on wood), off-grid electricity (footprint project) powered by the sun, a biodiesel generator, and a bike generator (rock the bike).
