Learning to forgive is more than a moral mandate. Forgiveness can liberate us from the tyranny of false hopes and corrosive resentments, and thereby improve our emotional, physical, and relational well-being, (Sarinpoulos, 2000; Luskin, 1999; Luskin, 2000; Van Oyen, Witvilet, Ludwig & Vander Laan, 2001). The concept of forgiveness can be easy to understand, but difficult to implement.
The topic of forgiveness is also not without controversy. We can bring distorted, counter-therapeutic notions into our relationships: many people confuse forgiveness with excusing, forgetting, or reconciling. Notable theorists have also questioned the therapeutic value of forgiving - objecting, for example, that forgiving bypasses the necessary work of grieving (Herman, 1992) or ignores the demands of justice (Miller, 1991).
This presentation will offer a notion of forgiveness that affirms both the need for grieving and for justice, and explains how forgiveness is usually more therapeutic for the “forgiver” than the “forgiven.” Forgiveness will be described as a process that is informed by insights from Psychoanalytic, Family Systems, and Cognitive/Behavioral Theories.
Optional no-host lunch following the presentation
