Learn three techniques for turning the symphony of sounds around us in our everyday lives into music.
About this Event

Part of the 2024 CETI Enchanted Technology Festival

Instructors: Jon Daries

Session 1: Saturday, August 3 , 2024. 2:30pm -- 5:30pm.

Session 2: Saturday, August 10 , 2024. 2:30pm -- 5:30pm.

The goals of this workshop are to teach how you don't need traditional musical instruments to make music. From the tinkle of water on a downspout to the backfiring of a car, to the growl of the garbage trucks, our sonic landscape is rich with raw material that we can harvest and use to create unconventional musical works. We will have an overview of the topic, discuss some examples of works made this way, and then practice field recording. Then, students will use their field recordings to explore three techniques for processing these sounds: sampling, tape loops, and granular synthesis. Using a common pool of found sounds, each student will arrange a composition made entirely of sounds collected as part of the workshop. No musical background required.

Prerequisite: An openness to experimentation and a laptop

Required Materials: a laptop
