The Blue Ridge Orchestra introduces its 25th Anniversary Season with two performances of “Finding Home”. This series debuts new Music Director, Dr. Emily Mariko Eng.
Join the Blue Ridge Orchestra for a musical celebration of fall in two 3:00 pm concerts: on Saturday, October 19th in Charles Beall Auditorium of Haywood Community College; and on Sunday, October 20th in Lipinsky Auditorium, UNC Asheville. Finding Home elicits the many emotions that accompany life’s journey and explorations. Experiencing the magic of both urban and rural environments, far away destinations, and the familiarity of home, this concert will include Quinn Mason’s Inner City Rhapsody, Copland’s Letter from Home, Gershwin’s American in Paris, and Carlos Simon’s The Block! We are proud to feature renowned baritone Isaiah Feken on Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and Joan Tower’s Sixth Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman.
This is a pivotal year for the Blue Ridge Orchestra. Dr. Emily Mariko Eng is excited to begin her tenure as Music Director of the Blue Ridge Orchestra, after guest conducting Schumann’s Symphony No. 1 in last season’s Spring Fourth concert. Originally from New Hampshire, Emily serves on the music faculty at UNC Asheville, where she is Director of Wind Bands. Prior to her role at UNC Asheville, Emily earned a DMA in Conducting from the University of Georgia, an MM in Conducting from New England Conservatory, and a BS in Biochemistry and Music Composition from Brandeis University.
“This concert program explores all meanings of home: finding community, discovering a sense of self, pioneering one’s artistic voice, feeling at peace even in a faraway land. For me, I am comforted to already feel at home with the Blue Ridge Orchestra, one of the warmest groups of musicians here in Asheville. They have made me feel welcomed, and I am so excited to develop this relationship and make beautiful music together.”
The Blue Ridge Orchestra has been making quality, symphonic music accessible to audiences across WNC since 1999. Comprised of over fifty talented local musicians who volunteer their time to practice, rehearse, and perform, the BRO has showcased its talents in Asheville, Canton, Swannanoa, Black Mountain, and Clyde.
