The Evening Muse Award-Winning Weekly Open Mic featuring John Fenn Steila
Singer-songwriter and North Carolina native, John Fenn Steila, had quite an unconventional introduction to music. In 1997 he left home joining seminary where he received his only formal training in Gregorian Chant. Circumstance changed his path where influences such as Pink Floyd, Sun Kil Moon, Gomez, Joseph Arthur, and Gordon Lightfoot lit the fire to teach himself guitar in 2000. He was good at it and "wrote enough songs for a record". As he wrote, he heard that music in his head. Most might take to finding players at that time but instead he took to learning.
Steila, friends call him Fenn, built a studio in his childhood home where he taught himself bass, keyboard, mandolin, and percussion. Several after-show meetings lined him up with one of his greatest influences, Ian Ball of Gomez, where they discussed the endeavor. A demo was sent, and Ball told him to get a band together. July 10th, 2005 There Are Voices was released with Ball himself playing guitar, mixing, singing, and helping Steila arrange on 2 tracks. He later added other local musicians to the roster and just like magic they created a true work of art as Heart of a Ghost.
Fast forward to the present where musicians all over the world have had time to reflect during the Pandemic, Fenn has , once again, picked up his guitar and pen and began to write music that the world deserves to hear. Come to a show and see for yourself.
"Mastermind John Fenn Steila eschews any one specific rock-quartet convention by coaxing out the kind of atmospheres and natural world images that traditional folk does, but washes the entire affair in a type of eclectic electric aural solution that smooths the folksy angles of the songs into postmodernist sonic waves."
