Australia is in the grip of its worst energy crisis for years. Near-record international prices for coal and gas, coupled with a wave of outages at ageing coal-fired power stations, have plunged the market into turmoil, triggering the temporary suspension of the electricity wholesale market as the market operator struggled to keep the lights on.
But while it is playing out against the backdrop of a global energy crisis due to the Ukraine war, the east coast energy crunch is mostly home-grown after years of policy inaction and denial. It raises big questions about the management and pace of the country’s transition to low-carbon energy, despite broad-based support from federal and state governments for the transition to a grid powered primarily by renewables.
While it is challenging to predict how the energy transition will unfold, turbulence seems to be inevitable on our journey to a low-carbon economy. How will the transition play out, especially with the newly-elected Labor government recommitting to sharper reductions in carbon emissions by 2030? Will gas and coal be part of the capacity market to back up renewable electricity? How can business leaders and investors lead the way?
The Australian Financial Review Energy & Climate Summit is the nation’s leading platform to shape Australia’s energy and climate future. Featuring political leaders, regulators, energy producers, disrupters and industry insiders, the summit will navigate Australia’s dynamic and evolving energy landscape and our pathways to zero emissions by 2050.
