Australia is set to rebound from the most disruptive shock to the global economy since World War Two. We have come through COVID-19 with fewer fatalities, less economic damage and higher rates of vaccination than many other comparable countries. But alongside learning to live with COVID-19, we must now deal with a raft of urgent new challenges.
Broken supply chains must be repaired to contain inflation and encourage business investment. Labour shortages demand a ramp-up of immigration amid keener global competition for talent. The cheap money that has fuelled housing bubbles and a wave of corporate M&A needs to be withdrawn. A global energy crunch that rewards fossil-fuel suppliers is in conflict with the opportunities of transitioning to a lower carbon economy.
Politically, state and federal governments will need to reset how they work together. Australia must balance its export dependency on China with increasing geo-strategic alignment with the US and UK. And on the eve of a federal election, neither Liberal nor Labor both have a plan for winding back the heavier burden of public debt.
As we exit the crisis, The Australian Financial Review’s flagship Business Summit 2022 convenes global and national political, business and expert leadership to help shape a new platform for growth.
Speakers will include:
• Matt Comyn - CEO, Commonwealth Bank Of Australia
• Louise Davidson - CEO, Australian Council Of Superannuation Investors
• Hamish Douglass - Chairman, Magellan Financial Services
