As Ontario’s finance minister, Peter Bethlenfalvy has to balance both the politics and economics of building a budget that bankrolls our hospitals and schools, but also backstops the province from U.S. trade shocks. Just weeks ahead of the next provincial budget, bring your questions to the Democracy Forum at TMU, co-hosted by Toronto Star columnist and Dais Senior Fellow Martin Regg Cohn, and Amy Peng, Dean of Arts and Associate Professor of Economics at TMU.
About the Guest
Peter Bethlenfalvy has been Ontario’s Minister of Finance since 2020, and was previously president of the treasury board, with ministerial responsibility for Digital and Data Transformation. He first won election as MPP for Pickering-Uxbridge in 2018. A former executive in the financial sector, he ran the Dominion Bond Rating Service, he holds a BSc. and Master of Business Administration from McGill and an MA in political science from U of T.

Martin Regg Cohn is a political columnist at the Toronto Star. Founder of the Democracy Forum at Toronto Metropolitan University, he is a Senior Fellow at the Dais. A foreign correspondent for 11 years in Asia and the Middle East, he was also Foreign Editor and a Parliamentary correspondent. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto.

Amy Peng is Dean of Arts and Associate Professor of Economics at Toronto Metropolitan University. She specializes in labour economics and applied econometrics, and was previously associate dean of innovation in teaching and learning. She holds a PhD and MA in economics from the University of Guelph,. and a BA from Hebei University of Economics and Trade.
