Please join pianist Imri Talgam and me for my final recital at McGill! This recital will feature the avant-garde composer Nikolai Roslavets (b. Dushatin, Ukraine, 1881; d. Moscow, 1944).His music, despite being innovative in construction and impressive in musical affect, remains largely unknown due to political tensions and repression during the early Soviet Union, along with the censorship of his works after his death. A revival of his music has begun only recently, most of it within the art history domain thanks to Roslavets’s close ties to the well-known painter Kazimir Malevich. My doctoral research specifically explores the use of gesture in Roslavets’s violin music, as well as how these musical gestures relate to the abstract, avant-garde artistic aesthetics promoted by Malevich and others involved in his artistic movement Suprematism.
Sonata for Violin & Piano no. 2 (1917)
