" is both a tribute to D.H. Lawrence’s original journey (as narrated in Sea and Sardinia, 1921) across Sicily and Sardinia, and a contemporary exploration of the Sicilian and Sardinian soul, islands caught between tradition and change. While presenting a contemporary interpretation of the modern, Daniele Marzeddu’s work simultaneously provides an evocation of the timeless qualities of the islands that so captivated Lawrence, particularly the vast, mountainous terrain, the deep connection to the sea, and the enduring presence of Sardinia’s social and cultural heritage. This book showcases – in a style of which Lawrence would almost certainly have approved – the psychogeography of the two islands.
Marzeddu’s Films of Sicily and Sardinia can be seen as a continuation and evolution of this legacy. Just as Lawrence sought to reveal the soul of Sardinia through words, Marzeddu does so through film and through photography, exploring the intersections of history, landscape, and identity. While Lawrence’s work immortalised the Sardinia of theearly 20th century, Marzeddu’s films expand this narrative to include contemporary reflections on the distinct yet interconnected cultural identities of Sardinia and Sicily.
Films of Sicily and Sardinia is, therefore, an invitation to explore lands that remain as fascinating and mysterious today as it was when Lawrence first set foot on its shores in 1921."
