Cost: Free; registration recommended. Jonathan Li’s crime thriller is based on the true story of a 1995 bank heist that was the largest in China’s history. Three of the robbers were caught, but the two masterminds, cousins Chen Xinwen (Da Peng) and Chen Xin’nian (Sunny Sun), were tipped off and escaped the country to work incognito in a jade quarry. Twenty-one years later, retired cop Wang Shouyue (Lam Ka-tung), who worked the case, catches a glimpse of what he thinks is one of the escaped robbers in the background of a news report, and he decides to investigate. The film’s suspenseful cat-and-mouse plot is given depth by its exploration of the characters’ psyches and is driven by several remarkable performances, particularly Da Peng as a fugitive feeling the pressure of living a secret life. It’s no wonder this smash hit spent nearly three weeks atop the Chinese box office.
