Wadjda / 2012 / 1hr&38mins / Subtitled / Rated PG
As part of Womens History Month in March 2023 we will be watching Wadjda, a joyful coming-of-age film which follows a spirited and defiant young Saudi girl. Significantly, first ever Saudi female director Haifaa al-Mansour created Wadjda during the time that Saudi women were first given the right to vote in 2011.
The story follows 10-year-old Wadjda, a tenacious, entrepreneurial and rebellious girl who is determined to buy a green bicycle in order to beat her friend, Abdullah, in a race. Wadjda's mother refuses, fearing repercussions from the Saudi society, not weighed down by its social commentary, Wadja is a comedic and hopeful film.
“You'd need a heart of stone not to be won over by Wadjda, a rebel yell with a spoonful of sugar and a pungent sense of a Riyadh society split between the home, the madrasa and the shopping mall.” Xan Brooks, The Guardian
Ahead of the feature we will be screening Good Girls Don't - a Women Over Fifty Film Festival short. Women Over 50 Film Festival (WOFFF) champions and showcases the work of older women on screen and behind the camera with an annual short film festival and year-round events and film screenings.
