About this Event
Join us for film screenings, talks from panelists who will shed light on the importance and intersections of race, food security, and international cooperation, and network with development sector enthusiasts and professionals.
Venue: Paul O'Regan Hall, Halifax Central Library
Time: 5:00 to 9:00 PM (Race Is A Four Letter Word will be screened at 5:00 PM, and A Chocoalte Farmer will be screened at 7:00 PM).
Race Is A Four Letter Word: In this personal documentary, director Sobaz Benjamin introduces us to an interesting group of people: a black woman who wants to be considered iconically Canadian, a white man who is culturally and psychologically black, and a black woman who decides to leave “Canada’s racial cold war.” He also exposes himself, a black man who grew up trying to bleach his skin. In the end, Race Is a Four-Letter Word teaches us that the soul has no colour. Yet, we also learn that race is a marathon we are all forced to run (1 hr run time).
A Chocolate Farmer: This full-length documentary takes us to an unspoiled corner of southern Belize, where cacao farmer and father Eladio Pop manually works his plantation in the tradition of his Mayan ancestors: as a steward of the land. The film captures a year in the life of the Pop family as they struggle to preserve their values in a world that is dramatically changing around them. A lament for cultures lost, The Chocolate Farmer challenges our deeply held assumptions of progress. (55 minutes run time).
Light refreshments will be offered at this event. This event is organized as part of Atlantic Council for International Cooperation's International Development Week events. To attend other similar events happening around you, click here.
