SEPT. 29: It's officially autumn! For us here at Second Screen, this means it's time to show some deep cuts from one of favorite cinematic genres, ??????. We're kicking off Halloween season with our friends at Green Light Cinema in downtown St. Pete with an oft-overlooked entry in Wes Craven's filmography: The Serpent and the Rainbow.
Theatrically released in 1988, The Serpent and the Rainbow, which is loosely based on the nonfiction book of the same name by ethnobotanist Wade Davis, takes us into the realm of Haitian voodoo and the lore of the zombie (not the cannibalistic George Romero variety we're typically used to seeing). The story centers around an anthropologist (Bill Pullman) who travels to Haiti during a time of deep political and civil unrest to study a drug used in religious practices to turn victims into living zombies. Could it be...Voodoo?
Suggested donation is $5 per guest, which goes directly toward supporting our nonprofit series' events. Eventbrite tickets are now available in our bio.
We're still playing it safe with the recent Delta variant surge in COVID-19 variant cases, so seating will be limited to the first 50 guests and masks are strongly recommended.
