About this Event
Join us for a free screening of Solar Flares: Deaf Heritage
In celebration of Deaf Awareness Week, Deaf Action have teamed up with Edinburgh International Festival, to present a screening of short films made by Deaf people, created as part of Solar Bear’s project Solar Flares: Deaf Heritage.
Solar Bear wanted to find new and creative ways to share Scotland’s rich deaf heritage with the world as Deaf histories are rarely visible in museums, in film or on stage. So, they have supported the creation of new films by deaf artists, covering topics, such as deaf education, deaf sport, deaf creativity and deaf identity.
The films to be shown are:
Deaf Kilmarnock, Their Story by Scott Campbell
Ayrshire Society for the Deaf is situated in the centre of Kilmarnock, a small Scottish town. It is home to a group of deaf people who meet to socialise in a familiar language (BSL). The future of the club is uncertain, as the numbers have reduced over the years and the current members are mainly elderly.
Glasgow Deaf Athletic Football Club by George McGowan
This film tells the story of Glasgow Deaf Athletic Football Club, a hub for deaf sports and community for over 100 years. The current club manager George McGowan looks back at the rich history of the club and reflects on the current challenges the club is facing and why the club remains an important hub for the deaf community in an ever-changing world.
The film screenings will be followed by a panel discussion, held in BSL.
