About this Event
“If ever we need proof that sport doesn’t just mirror social and political trends but shapes them, ‘Running for the Revolution’ is it.” Sebastian Coe, World Athletics President
When Cuba’s Alberto Juantorena achieved the historic 400m/800m double at the Montreal Olympics in 1976, he became an instant athletics legend, dedicating his wins to Fidel Castro and the Cuban revolution. This feature length documentary, by award-winning filmmaker Mark Craig, chronicles the life journey of Cuba’s greatest track and field athlete and his continuing service to the sport he loves.
Five years in the making, and granted exceptional access, it shows the highs and lows of his career, providing insights to Cuba, its revolution and its relationship with the United States. Also featured are Mike Boit, Kenya’s brilliant 800m runner, who joined the African nations anti-apartheid boycott of the Montreal Games; and Fred Newhouse, the US runner who regarded the 400m gold medal as his destiny, and forms a close bond with Juantorena when reunited with him in Cuba.
