About the Film
Independência retraces Angola’s path from colonial subjugation to sovereignty, drawing on memories of the liberation struggle and its key moments. On November 11, 1975, after fourteen years of armed resistance against Portuguese rule, the nation finally proclaimed its independence.
About the Director
Fradique is an Angolan filmmaker and curator, acclaimed for Air Conditioner (MUBI, 2021), a poetic fusion of dystopia, sci-fi, and magical realism. A passionate advocate for Global South cinema, he has served on selection committees for Berlinale (Panorama) and Locarno (Open Doors), and has mentored emerging filmmakers through the European Film Market and the Rough Cut Lab. He is a member of the Science New Wave and a fellow of Global Media Makers and Film Independent. Fradique is an alumnus of the New York Film Academy (2006) and the Academy of Art University (BFA, 2010). In 2023, he received the SFFILM Sloan Science in Cinema Fellowship to develop his new feature, Hold Time for Me.
