Join the SCAD Museum of Art’s Evans Center for African American Studies for a screening of Spencer Williams’ 1944 film Go Down, Death! After the screening, SCAD cinema studies professor Chad Newsom leads a presentation on the untold story of Savannah’s first Black movie theater.
Race and movie going have intersected since the medium’s origins, and for cinema’s first 70 years, going to the movies was an unequal and segregated experience. In response, African American entrepreneurs built, owned, and operated theaters, creating a welcoming space for Black moviegoers in the age of Jim Crow. Learn the story of Savannah’s first African American theater — what made it so groundbreaking and how it challenges and changes our understanding of cinema history.
