The Singapore Butoh Collective is excited to invite you to the first ever Singapore screening of Body and the World by the SU-EN Butoh Company. This special event opens a rare window into the artistry of Swedish Butoh pioneer SU-EN and her company’s unique approach to dance and performance.
This one-night-only community screening is FREE with RSVP, bringing together artists, movers, and curious audiences to experience Butoh on screen and celebrate a practice that has been steadily taking root, shaping a new generation of Singaporean performing arts and embodied practices. Join us in welcoming SU-EN’s work to Singapore.

The film Body and the World presents the aesthetics and work method of SU-EN Butoh Company and depicts the activities over 30 years with Butoh, choreography and art projects. The film enters deeply into the world of the international dance company SU-EN Butoh Company’s artistic activities and performances on stage. It presents the Japanese roots of Butoh dance and further how the Butoh Body of SU-EN was developed. The film shows the essence of SU-EN Butoh Method in relation to nature and the struggle of being alive, as well as glimpses from the daily life, work and dance training at the SU-EN Butoh Company center, Haglund Skola in Almunge, Sweden. It also presents excerpts from stage performances around the world and the aspects of the performance that the audience usually never gets to see; weeks and months of creating the choreography and the costumes, stage art and hairstyles. The film follows projects with creative collaborators in Tokyo, New York and Nagano as well as a visit to the Hijikata archive.
