Join us Saturday, February 1, as we delve into the rich, untold stories of African Americans and their deep connection to the Chesapeake Bay with a film screening and panel discussion of Water’s Edge - Black Watermen of the Chesapeake. The film chronicles unsung Marylanders that revolutionized an industry, dreamed beyond their circumstance and are still keeping this tradition alive today.Discover the legacy of:�⚓ George H. Brown, a visionary steamboat captain who redefined recreation for Black Marylanders.�🛶 The Turner Family of Bellevue, pioneers and innovators in the maritime world.�🎣 Today’s Black captains who have survived by shifting their businesses from commercial fishing to chartering fishing parties.
The Black Maritime installation on the museum’s third-floor permanent gallery provides a deeper look into the history of Black captains and workers in Maryland, highlighting their contributions in paving the way for Black maritime leaders today.
