About this Event
Composers Kat Vokes and Juan Dussán sit down to discuss how they have navigated the early stages of their careers in film scoring, and offer advice on how you can do the same. Kat and Juan will also discuss how they have broadened their horizons as musicians, working on a variety of projects from box office heavyweight features, to indie films and trailers.
Who are Kat and Juan?
Juan Dussán is an award winning composer celebrated for his distinctive approach to film scoring, blending emotional, intimate, and modern orchestral landscapes with undertones of electronic textures. His work is characterized by a deep focus on character, story, and emotion, creating soundscapes that resonate on both an intellectual and emotional level.
Dussán's music has made significant waves in the industry, with highlights including Francesca Scorcese’s Crimson Ties, which made its debut at the Tribeca® Film Festival, Hourglass Cosmetics’ campaign featuring Oscar® winner Julianne Moore, the trailer campaign for the Golden Globe® Nominee Lee, starring Kate Winslet, and his feature film debut Chasing Light, directed by Travis Robertson.
Beyond his work in film and media, Dussán has established himself as one of the most influential creators on social media platforms within the composer world with over 200k followers between Instagram and TikTok.
Kat Vokes is an award-winning composer, vocalist and pianist, specializing in writing for film and multimedia. She is a recipient of the 2022 BMI Pete Carpenter Fellowship and was awarded the 2020 ASCAP Jimmy Van Heusen Award.
Vokes is known for her creative and highly emotive palette and draws inspiration from a wide variety of genres, creating a unique sound world for each project. Most recently, she collaborated with award-winning filmmaker Jasmine Ching-Hui Lee on Come Home My Child, a feature documentary shot over the course of 10 years, as well as with Matty Brown on his thriller The Sand Castle (Netflix). Her music can also be heard on Don Argott's Kelce (Amazon) and Robert Budreau's Queen Of Bones.
As a vocalist, Vokes can be heard on Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt's score for Greta Gerwig's Barbie. She is also featured in the opening titles of season 2 of Hot White Heist, and in the score for the video game Blossom Tales. She has sung in festivals across the United States and abroad and her debut album, Clockwork, was released with Ropeadope Records in 2019.
