Sam Tripp, originally from Wilmington North Carolina, began his cello studies at age twelve with Jake Wenger and then continued with Dr. Brooks Whitehouse in High School at UNC School of the Arts. Since the fall of 2023, he has been studying with Ross Harbaugh at the Frost School of Music. Sam has also had the honor of studying in masterclasses and festivals with cellists Jan Vogler, Andrew Shulman, Clive Greensmith, Peter Wiley, Andrea Casarrubios, Natasha Brofsky, and Colin Carr.
In 2022, Sam made his orchestral debut performing the Saint-Saens Cello Concerto No. 1 with the Winston-Salem Symphony after winning first-place in the senior division of the Peter Perret Youth Talent Search. In 2023 he was awarded first prize at the Wilmington Thursday Morning Music Club Scholarship Concerto Competition, and in 2024 he was awarded the Herrold Cello Scholarship at the Frost School of Music for his outstanding skill and hard work.
Not only confined to the Western Classical Canon, Sam’s improvisational crossover abilities as a cellist, electric cellist, and vocalist have led him to performances at Alice Tully Hall at the Lincoln Center, Festival Napa Valley, Adrienne Arsht Center, Resonance at Honey Well Arts Academy and has shared the stage with artists such as Charles Yang, Time for Three, Ray Chen, Etienne Charles, Randy Brecker, Lisa Fischer, and Sirintip.
As an up and coming composer, arranger, songwriter and collaborator, his works have been featured in concerts, short films, albums, plays, across the united states. His distinct style of writing balances fluidly classical tradition with minimalism, neoclassicism, jazz, and improvisation in an intimate and cinematic way. In 2025 Sam premiered Salvatores Clama, a piece for solo cello and string orchestra written for Sam by rising composer Noah Rairick and in August of 2026 will be premiering two new virtuoso works written for him by Josue Torres and Benjamin Montes.
