Sam Tripp, originally from Wilmington North Carolina, began his cello studies at age twelve with Jake Wenger and then continued with Dr. Brooks Whitehouse in High School at UNC School of the Arts. Since the fall of 2023, he has been pursuing an undergraduate cello performance degree at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami where he is currently studying with Professor Ross Harbaugh. Sam has also had the honor of studying in masterclasses and festivals with cellists Jan Vogler, Clive Greensmith, Peter Wiley, Andrea Casarrubios, Natasha Brofsky, and Colin Carr.
In 2022, Sam made his orchestral debut performing the Saint-Saens Cello Concerto No. 1 with the Winston-Salem Symphony after winning first-place in the senior division of the Peter Perret Youth Talent Search. In 2023 he was awarded first prize at the Wilmington Thursday Morning Music Club Scholarship Concerto Competition, and in 2024 he was awarded the Herrold Cello Scholarship at the Frost School of Music for his outstanding skill and hard work.
Sam is also very dedicated to studying the chamber music repertoire. During his time at UNC School of the Arts in high school, he was the cellist of the Blue Ridge Piano Trio where he performed recitals across North Carolina, outreach concerts, UNCSA Chamber Music Festivals, and, the preliminary and semifinal rounds of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in 2022.
In addition to studying the classics, he is passionate about performing, recording, writing, and arranging contemporary styles such as jazz, pop, rock, and beyond. Inspired by musicians such as Yo Yo Ma, Pedro Eustache, and Steven Sharp Nelson, Sam explores the limits of the cello beyond the incredible Western Classical canon. Through this exploration, he has collaborated and performed alongside artists such as Sirintip, Lisa Fischer, Ray Chen, Randy Brecker, and Time For Three. Sam continues to advance his crossover skills as the cellist of the Miami based folk band, FiddleHead.
An important part of his career and education in music has always been giving back. In high school Sam was a member of the Tri-M Honors Society which would regularly go to local nursing homes in order to play music for residents. In his individual endeavors he also gave back to his community by organizing several concerts across North Carolina with his band Unchambered, to raise funds and support for the local foster-care non-profit, The Restored Souls Foundation. He will also frequently visit elementary and middle schools in his hometown to perform mini concerts for students, inspiring young students and educating them about music.
