Film Night: The Ladykillers - Cinema Seventeen Nineteen

The Ladykillers is a 1955 British black comedy crime film directed by Alexander Mackendrick for Ealing Studios. It stars Alec Guinness, Cecil Parker, Herbert Lom, Peter Sellers, Danny Green, Jack Warner, and Katie Johnson as the old lady, Mrs. Wilberforce.

William Rose wrote the screenplay, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and won the BAFTA Award for Best British Screenplay. He claimed to have dreamt the entire film and merely had to remember the details when he awoke.

In the film, a lonely widow rents rooms to a gang leader and his crew. While preparing a heist, the gang members pose as musicians. Shortly after the heist, the widow realizes that they have stolen money and threatens to report them to the police. The gang members reluctantly decide to K*ll her. They turn on each other before actually doing so, and they are all killed in the resulting conflict. Since the skeptical police reject her attempts to return the money, the widow gets to keep it.
