Stanley Kubrick set the gold standard for grand historical epics with this Oscar-winning historical drama about the Thracian gladiator who led a slave rebellion against the Roman Empire in the 1st century BC. The film weaves a sprawling, richly detailed tale, featuring lush Technicolor cinematography and a raft of supporting roles by the likes of Laurence Olivier, Tony Curtis, and Peter Ustinov (who won an Oscar for his performance). Yet Spartacus is truly a showcase for the late, great Kirk Douglas, who produced the film and brought his trademark intensity to the title role.
