๐๐ฏ๐ผ๐๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ:
The Philippines is rich in indigenous beliefs and practices that pertain to the spirit world (anitos, diwata, dwende), the after life (lamay, pagpag, babang luksa, pa-syam, etc.) deities (Bathala, Kabunian, Lumawig, Apo Malayari, etc.), mythical creatures (aswang, tambaluslos, tikbalang, kapre, manananngal, bakunawa, mansalauan, marukos), and so called "superstitious beliefs" (creation stories of the Igorots, Ifugao, Tagalog, Visayans and Cebuanos (pintados), Mindanao (Bagobo, Mandaya, Limokon, T-bolis) and the beliefs in Shamans or Manggagamot (babaylan, mumbaki, albularyo, etc.); and many of those survived to the modern world through stories that were passed on from generation to generation. The Spanish Catholic colonizers of the past (and even some clerics in the present) tried to suppress them and dismiss them as useless superstitions, but they persisted among the mass consciousness. Many beliefs and practices are so pervasive that the dominant religion can't do anything about it but inculturize them into its belief systems. This gave rise to a Catholic belief system with practices that is very unique to the Philippines.
But is it a bad thing or a good thing? One of the goals of Theosophy is the study of comparative religions to connect the dots to make sense of the world and our existence beyond the narratives of official mainstream religions and the belief systems of the dominant culture, which at present is based on empiricist-materialist paradigm that denies everything that is beyond the visible physical reality. Pre-Christian Indigenous belief systems across ancient cultures around the world, including the well-documented ones such as the Egyptian, African, Druidic, or Hellenistic cultures, have similar themes- that is the existence of a spirit world and the after-life, the existence of deities and beings, and the ability of humans to contact and travel to these worlds, and bring back their wisdom and powers into our own world, in what appears to be a Shamanic journey process, that is common in most indigenous beliefs. It even appears that the story of Christ Jesus, that is the dying and rising again from the dead in the Christian narrative, follows the pattern of the Shamanic journey of ancient indigenous cultures.
Mr. Estrada of the Partido State University of the Philippines will explore some of the Filipino indigenous belief systems pertaining to the after-life and the spirit world in a very interesting lecture. A group discussion with the participants will follow.
