Who were the skilled Black artisans whose work helped shape early America? Join us for an illustrated presentation drawing on the DAR Museum’s exhibition Fighting for Freedom: Black Craftspeople and the Pursuit of Independence.
Through furnishings, decorative arts, tools, and personal stories, the program explores the lives and contributions of Black craftspeople from the Revolutionary era through the Civil War and beyond. Six themes—Mastery, Contradictions, Pride, Identity, Sojourn, and Moments—reveal their creativity, achievements, and struggles for freedom and recognition. Their stories offer a fuller picture of the people whose work shaped American homes and history.
The presentation begins with a brief introduction to the Daughters of the American Revolution and the DAR Museum’s collections.
Presented by Denise Kindschi Gosselin, Ph.D., DAR Museum Correspondent Docent and Professor Emerita at Western New England University. Dr. Gosselin is a member of the Betty Allen Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution of Northampton.
All are welcome. Suggested donation $10, no one turned away.
