Juan del Gastor is a dedicated and non-intimidating teacher who transmits a contagious sense of flamenco joy wherever he goes, inspiring all with his arte! If you are already singing or dancing, come and get some grassroots aire! If you've always wondered what it would be like to sing or dance flamenco, come to this class and try it out. Juan's style is welcoming to all levels from absolute beginners to more seasoned aficionados. He'll be assisted by his English-speaking wife, dancer Luci Rozario.

JUAN DEL GASTOR was born in Moron de la Frontera and is a nephew of the legendary guitarist Diego del Gastor. A direct heir to the Gastor legacy, he has toured with Farruquito and Torombo and has accompanied such revered singers as Camarón de la Isla, Miguel Funi and Fernanda de Utrera. A natural entertainer and festero, Juan loves to sing and dance in the Gypsy style of his home town. His contagious good humor and spontaneity have sparked many an impromptu flamenco fiesta, which have drawn to a close in the early hours with the sound of his guitar playing a soulful soleá.

Juan is joined by his compañera, LUCI ROZARIO who has lived closely within the Gypsy culture for more than 25 years. She learned her first dance steps in Juan’s family’s weddings and baptisms. Later she learned dance technique with Juan’s relatives Pepe Rios, Juana Amaya and with Angelita Vargas. Luci has worked in the Sevilla Fair, in El Rocio and in many galas. She teaches dance and compás classes in her studio in the center of Seville.

Class will take place on patio behind the home of Bay Area Flamenco Festival director, Nina Menendez. Please bring something to keep warm in case it gets chilly. We can move inside for an informal participatory fiesta afterward. And please bring something to eat and drink for the fiesta!
