About this Event
Join us on March 21st for a joint Carolina Wetlands Association and North Carolina Native Plant Society visit to Sandy Creek Environmental Park in Durham, NC. This unique 101.7-acre park is a wetland restoration project, located on one of Durham’s former sewage treatment plants. In the 1990’s a Master Plan was adopted to create an environmental park on the site, now consisting of trails, observation decks, a butterfly garden, restrooms and picnic facilities. During the field trip we will observe a braided stream and wetland complex in excellent condition, where the central portion remains ponded year-round. Early spring ephemerals, sprouting sedges, irises and grasses along with amphibian egg masses and active beaver activity, including a lodge, will be on our list to enjoy! Bring some snacks or a lunch if you would like to stay later for a picnic. There may be an opportunity to see birds or wildlife, so consider bringing binoculars.
There are bathroom facilities on site.
