Sam Landes of the Mushroom Club of Georgia leads an informative and fun mushroom foraging walk at the Lake Charlotte Nature Preserve, a 216-acre rustic woodland that's home to shagbark hickories, white oaks and several towering beech trees in a forest park along the South River. Centered on the now-drained Lake Charlotte, the preserve is one of Atlanta's largest mature forests and a home to wildlife that is beautiful and special. The thick tree canopy, tree stumps and drained lakebed help provide the ideal conditions for mushroom colonies to grow. You will learn how to identify mushroom species, common locations of mushroom fruiting bodies, and which natural cues to look for when mushroom hunting.About the Guide : Sam Landes is a former Montessori teacher and the current treasurer of the Mushroom Club of Georgia and the foray committee chair for the North American Mycological Association (NAMA). He enjoys giving presentations to garden clubs, master naturalist classes and school groups. The Mushroom Club of Georgia is an educational, social and outdoor-oriented organization with a mission to promote the study of all aspects of the fungal world, including foraging and identifying wild mushrooms, cultivating edible and medicinal mushrooms, making art using fungi and exploring the ways fungi interact with our environment.
