Trip/area Description: Lake Kissimmee State Park is a large park that protects the cattle-raising heritage of Florida. excellent opportunities for birders. The park's abundance of water, wetlands and numerous different habitats offers views of different waterfowl and birds of prey. The scrub habitat throughout the park is home to the Florida Scrub Jay. White-tailed deer, Bald Eagles, Sandhill Cranes, Turkeys and bobcats have been seen in the park, located on the shores of lakes Kissimmee, Tiger and Rosalie. Visitors enjoy boating, canoeing and fishing in the picturesque lakes. Nature students can hike over 13 miles of trails to observe and study the abundant plant and animal life. A replica of an old-time cow camp is a major attraction.

Six miles of trails, including the Buster Island Trail, are open to equestrians and hikers. A large, shaded picnic area with pavilions is available.

Duration of trip: 4-5 hours.

Walking distance: Depends on which trail is hiked (see below)

Degree of difficulty: Easy trails on open road through an oak hammock. Two walks available here - #1 One mile walk to Cow Camp; #2 Three to four-mile hike along Buster Loop trail

Where to meet: IHOP parking lot at 8800 20th St. (SR 60) in Vero Beach for 90-minute drive to State Park.

Time of meeting: 7:00 a.m.
