About this Event
Please note that registration is required and carpooling is highly encouraged.
Join HWF and John Demko from the Carolina Butterfly Society for a guided butterfly identification hike! We will enter at the South Boundary entrance (444 South Boundary Ave SW, Aiken SC 29801) and walk a few miles, stopping often to observe and identify the diversity of butterflies that call the Woods home. Please note that trails are sandy and have grading topography. Please bring comfortable shoes to walk in, sunscreen, water, and snacks. You may also want to bring a camera and a notebook to record our observations. There are no public restrooms or places to refill a water bottle, so please plan accordingly.
About Hitchcock Woods: Hitchcock Woods, nestled in the heart of Aiken, South Carolina, is the largest urban forest in the United States at 2,100 acres. Open daily from sunrise to sunset, its 70 miles of trails offer a haven to the public on foot and horseback. Owned and managed by the Hitchcock Woods Foundation, the Woods comprise a mosaic of mature pine forests and bottomland hardwood forests, supporting a diversity of plants and wildlife. The Woods is protected in perpetuity by a conservation easement held by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and is a designated South Carolina Heritage Preserve Trust site.
