FIELD OF SYMBIOSIS
FIELD OF SYMBIOSIS
A Parisian Dialogue Between Eastern Cultural Heritage and Contemporary Art
Group Exhibition
13–18 July 2026
Opening Reception: Monday, 13 July, from 6:30 p.m.
Vanities Gallery is pleased to present Field of Symbiosis, a group exhibition bringing together five leading figures of contemporary Chinese art: Luo Xiangke, Zhang Yue, Huang Lingyun, Zhou Zhitao, and Tang Qishan.
Through practices ranging from printmaking and painting to abstraction, contemporary lacquer art, and symbolic visual language, these artists engage in a dialogue between Eastern cultural heritage and contemporary artistic expression. The exhibition explores the concept of symbiosis as a dynamic space where tradition, nature, materiality, and philosophical thought converge to offer new perspectives on today's world.
Presented in Paris, these works reject both exoticism and folkloric representation. Instead, they assert an autonomous artistic vision, deeply rooted in Chinese cultural traditions while fully engaging with the universal concerns of contemporary society.
Each artist offers a distinctive perspective:
- Luo Xiangke transforms printmaking into an exploration of time, space, and the invisible forces embedded within matter.
- Zhang Yue creates immersive paintings inspired by the living world, where nature unfolds as an ever-evolving ecosystem.
- Huang Lingyun translates the philosophical principles of Chinese thought into an abstract visual language based on balance, emptiness, and relationships.
- Zhou Zhitao reinvents the art of lacquer by making craftsmanship, materiality, and the passage of time central to his artistic practice.
- Tang Qishan reinterprets ancient scripts and archaic symbols to create a visual language that exists between image, memory, and perception.
By bringing together these five artistic practices, Field of Symbiosis highlights a new generation of Chinese contemporary artists whose work transcends conventional distinctions between East and West. The exhibition reflects a contemporary Chinese art scene that is firmly rooted in its cultural heritage while addressing the challenges and questions of the present.
Through this exhibition, Vanities Gallery continues its commitment to fostering artistic dialogue between Asian and Western cultures, presenting works that encourage thoughtful reflection, cultural exchange, and new ways of understanding the world.
