About this Event

Field Notes in Focus: Moon Photography

Location: Constitution Lakes Park

Program Overview

Experience the quiet magic of photographing the night sky with nature and wildlife photographer Don Orkoskey during this Field Notes in Focus session at Constitution Lakes Park.

As daylight fades and evening light emerges, participants will learn the fundamentals of astrophotography and how photographers capture the moon and other celestial features. Don will share practical guidance on camera settings, tripods, stabilization techniques, and tools that help photographers work successfully in low-light conditions.

This outdoor session invites participants to slow down, observe changing light conditions, and practice photographing the moon as it rises over the landscape. Whether you are new to astrophotography or curious about expanding your photography skills, this experience offers a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of nature, light, and the night sky.

Participants should bring a camera and tripod or other stabilization device if available. Smartphone photographers are welcome.

What We’ll Do

Participants will gather at Constitution Lakes Park near sunset as daylight begins to shift and evening light emerges. During this Field Notes in Focus session, Don will guide participants through techniques used to photograph the moon and night sky, including camera stabilization, exposure settings, and working with changing light conditions.

As we settle into the landscape and watch the sky transition, participants will have opportunities to practice photographing the moon while Naturalist Tasha provides context about the surrounding environment—creating a calm outdoor setting where patience, timing, and observation guide each click.

You Will Leave With

• Introductory astrophotography techniques
• Strategies for photographing the moon and night sky
• Practical photography techniques you can use immediately
