Field Notes: An Insight Institute Dinner
About this Event
Field Notes: An Insight Institute Dinner is an in-person dinner for event guests.
“Bring one lesson you earned the hard way. Leave with eighteen more.”
Some lessons are easy to explain after you have already lived through them.
Leave sooner.
Ask the difficult question earlier.
Do not confuse visibility with progress.
Hire differently.
Protect the relationship.
Stop waiting for certainty.
Field Notes is a small dinner built around lessons like these.
Nineteen people gather around a few shared tables.
There is no keynote.
There is no panel.
No one needs to arrive as an expert.
Every attendee brings one Field Note: a lesson learned through real experience in career, leadership, business, creative work, decision-making, or life.
Then the tables move.
The same lesson gets heard by people with different backgrounds.
Different lessons begin to connect.
And by the end of the evening, the room has created a collective record of what experience taught everyone the difficult way.
WHAT IS A FIELD NOTE?
A Field Note is not a speech.
It is one lesson you can explain simply.
A useful structure is:
WHAT HAPPENED?
Give just enough context.
WHAT CHANGED YOUR MIND?
What did you understand differently afterward?
WHAT DO YOU DO DIFFERENTLY NOW?
Turn the experience into something another person can consider.
Your Field Note does not need to be dramatic.
Ordinary lessons are welcome.
EXAMPLE FIELD NOTES
Examples might sound like:
“I stopped treating every opportunity as evidence that I should say yes.”
“The conversation I kept postponing was more expensive than the mistake itself.”
“Being useful in every meeting made me indispensable to the wrong work.”
“I learned to ask what success would make possible before agreeing on the metric.”
“The best career decision I made looked inefficient for the first year.”
These are examples only.
Your lesson should come from your own experience.
WHAT YOU DO NOT NEED TO SHARE
You are not required to disclose:
• Trauma
• Private family information
• Medical information
• Confidential employer information
• Personal financial details
• Client information
• Trade secrets
• Anything you would prefer to keep private
The purpose is insight, not forced vulnerability.
THE FIELD NOTES LEDGER
When you arrive, you will write one distilled sentence from your Field Note.
These sentences become the evening’s Field Notes Ledger.
The Ledger allows the group to see the range of lessons represented in the room, including notes from people they may not sit beside during every round.
The Ledger is a collaborative event output.
It is not a promotional gift or prize.
HOW THE DINNER WORKS
The room is divided into small tables.
Across the evening, participants move through three rounds.
Each round asks for a different layer of the same experience.
ROUND 1 - THE LESSON
What did experience teach you that theory did not?
Keep the story concise enough for everyone at the table to participate.
ROUND 2 - WHAT CHANGED AFTERWARD?
What behavior, assumption, or decision changed once you understood the lesson?
The purpose is to move beyond the story itself.
ROUND 3 - WHAT WOULD YOU TELL YOURSELF EARLIER?
If you could return to the moment before you learned the lesson, what would you say?
Not because the earlier version of you would necessarily listen.
But because the answer often reveals what the lesson actually means.
Where is it happening?
