SHOW INFO
PLOT SUMMARY
Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman, his wife Golde, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof's universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality, and religion—leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy, and sadness.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Roles are open to performers of all races, genders, body types, and cultural backgrounds.
AUDITION SIDES:
https://bit.ly/HSAC-FiddlerSides
Tevye | M 45-60 | Ab2 – F4
The likeable, hard-working, pious dairyman who always tries to see the positive side of life. He is a proud patriarch and father of five daughters, closely raised according to the old scriptures. He is stubborn but genial and is the heart and conscience of the show. The actor must have a good sense of comedic timing as well as the ability to express the pain and conflict felt by his character and the people of Anatevka.
Golde | F 40-50 | A3-Eb5
Tevye's strong-willed wife who is the backbone of the family. While she has a rather gruff exterior, she also has a soft side. Although she can be sharp-tongued, she should not come off as shrill.
Tzeitel | F 18-25 | B3-D5
Tevye's eldest daughter, who is loyal to her family and appreciative and respectful of their traditions and customs. However, she finds the courage to challenge those she no longer subscribes to—such as being able to marry for love to a man of her choosing. She unknowingly sets in motion a series of challenges to the Antatevkan way of life.
Hodel | F 18-23 | B3-E5
Tevye's second-eldest daughter who is intelligent, witty, and headstrong. While she has always been content with her traditional life, meeting Perchik—a young revolutionary—opens her mind and heart to new ideas.
Chava | F 15-20 | B3-D5
Tevye's middle daughter who is bookish, sensitive, and gentle; however, she finds an inner strength when faced with making an impossible choice that leads to severe consequences. The actor must be able to show both Chava’s lightness early in the show and later her pure grief as she is disowned by her family for eloping with the non-Jewish Fyedka.
Shprintze | F 9-13 | B3-D5
Tevye's fourth-eldest daughter, who takes lessons at home from
Perchik.
Bielke | F 8-12 | B3-D5
Tevye's youngest daughter. Takes lessons at home from Perchik.
Yente | F 50-60 | F3-F5
The meddling matchmaker. She is a widow and village busybody who knows all of the town gossip.
Motel | M 18-25 | E3-F#4
The poor and meek tailor who shares a deep love with Tzeitel. Sensitive and nervous, but sincere, friendly, and endearing.
Perchik | M 20-30 | B2-E4
An outspoken student and Anatevka newcomer, who constantly challenges the traditions of the town. Although his character’s disapproval of Anatevka’s ways—and introduction of new ideas—causes turmoil, he is still likeable, hard-working, and a good Jewish man... enabling Tevye to see past the boundaries of tradition.
Lazar Wolf | M 40-50 | C3-F#4
A feisty, brawny butcher and the town's wealthiest citizen who wishes to marry Tzeitel.
Avram | M 40-60 | D3-Eb4
Runs the local bookshop and keeps the town advised of all the news in the area.
Grandma Tzeitel | F 60-75 | C#4-D5
Golde's deceased grandmother, who endorses the marriage between Tzeitel and Motel. She appears in Tevye’s dream, so everything is a little exaggerated and larger than life. Will double as other role(s).
Fruma-Sarah | F 35-45 | C4-Eb5
Lazar's Wolf's deceased first wife. She becomes enraged when her husband plans to wed Tzeitel. Appearing in Tevye’s dream, she’s an extravagant (and spooky) presence who must command the stage Will double as other role(s).
Constable | M 35-45
Russian military official stationed near Anatevka who knows the villagers well. While he seems to have a friendly relationship with Tevye, at the end of the day, he is still someone from the “other side.”
Fyedka | M 20-25
A strong, young Russian soldier who sees past his military obligations and falls in love with Chava. He challenges Tevye's imposed silence.
