Class description:
In this four-part workshop, students will learn the foundations of Hawaiian lauhala weaving, from gathering lau to weaving their first project. Following the oral tradition passed down through generations, participants will gain an introductory understanding of both the practice and culture connected to this art form. This workshop can be seen as a good primer for next learning steps, such as the Kona weaving conference. All necessary materials will be provided, though students might like to bring their own spritzer or scissors, as well as gloves, sun hat, and long sleeve shirt for gathering lau.
Teaching Artist Bio:
Meredith Buck is a Lauhala weaving haumana (apprentice) living in Hōlualoa, HI. Bringing over a decade of fashion design experience, she is passionate about using her skills to contribute to the perpetuation of traditional Hawaiian lifeways in the modern era. When she is not weaving or working on her next project, Meredith loves to simply spend time at the ocean, in the garden, or with her loved ones.
